Hero Cards help families build children’s emotional resilience

Bath psychologist Dr Emmie has launched Hero Cards, helping children aged 6-12 build emotional resilience, confidence and coping skills at home.

A Bath psychologist and mother of three has launched a new card-based tool designed to help children develop emotional resilience, confidence and healthy coping skills before challenges become overwhelming.

Hero Cards, created by Dr Emmie, is a psychology-based card deck aimed at children aged six to 12. The resource uses simple activities, storytelling and conversation prompts to help families explore emotions together and develop practical strategies for managing life’s ups and downs.

The launch comes at a time when many parents are increasingly concerned about children’s emotional wellbeing. According to national figures, one in five children is likely to experience a mental health problem, while half of all mental health difficulties begin before the age of 14.

Dr Emmie said, “Emotional strength is a skill – and we can teach it. After years of working with adults struggling with unhelpful thinking and coping strategies, I realised how important it is to give children these tools early – before difficulties start. Hero Cards turns evidence-based psychology into something simple, playful and accessible for every family.”

The Hero Cards pack contains 49 oversized cards that guide children through a five-step journey designed to build emotional awareness and resilience.

Children begin by choosing a hero character before following stories that explore common experiences such as anxiety, jealousy and sadness. The cards then help children identify emotions, thoughts and physical sensations, recognise unhelpful coping habits and discover practical techniques to manage challenges more effectively.

The approach is based on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) principles but has been adapted so children can understand and use the tools independently or alongside parents, carers and teachers.

Each pack also includes a progress map, stickers and a personalised Hero Backpack Card. Families gain access to an online Members’ Portal featuring audio stories, guided wellbeing activities, downloadable resources and videos from Dr Emmie.

Dr Emmie said, “Children shouldn’t have to wait until they’re struggling to learn how to cope. These are the most important life skills they can learn – and every child deserves them early.”

Hero Cards has been co-designed with teachers and psychologists and tested with families. School resource packs are also available, while Teen and SEND editions are currently being developed.

As conversations around children’s mental health continue to grow, Hero Cards aims to give families practical, accessible ways to build emotional wellbeing at home through everyday conversations and shared experiences.
