Children at St Benedict’s Catholic Primary School have been helping to raise awareness of young people’s mental health by taking part in Hello Yellow Day, the annual campaign organised by mental health charity YoungMinds.
The school, which is part of the Dunstan Catholic Educational Trust, joined schools, workplaces and communities across the country in supporting the initiative, which encourages open conversations about emotional wellbeing and reminds children and young people that they are not alone when facing difficulties.
Launched in 2016, Hello Yellow has grown into a nationwide campaign, with participants wearing yellow to demonstrate their support for young people’s mental health. The initiative also helps raise funds for YoungMinds, which provides resources and support for young people and the adults who care for them.
At St Benedict’s, supporting children’s mental health and wellbeing is an important part of everyday school life. The school places particular emphasis on nurturing positive relationships, encouraging pupils to understand and express their feelings, and creating an environment where every child feels valued and supported.
Mrs Croker, headteacher at St Benedict’s Catholic Primary School, said, “Children’s mental health and wellbeing are at the heart of everything we do at St Benedict’s. We want every child to feel safe, valued and understood, and to know that they have trusted adults around them who will listen and support them.
“As a small school, we place great importance on building strong relationships and helping children develop the confidence to understand and express their feelings. Hello Yellow is a wonderful opportunity to reinforce that message and remind children that it is always OK to talk about how they feel.”
Helen Taylor, CEO of the Dunstan Catholic Educational Trust, added, “Every child deserves to feel that they belong, that their voice matters and that they have the support they need to thrive. Schools have an important role to play in nurturing not only children’s learning, but also their emotional wellbeing and resilience.”
The school also thanked parents and carers for supporting Hello Yellow Day and helping to reinforce the importance of talking openly about mental health.
