Bath city centre will come alive with music and movement this October when 80 young dancers take part in a free open-air celebration of Mary Shelley and her most famous creation, Frankenstein.
Freak Out with Frankenstein takes place near Bath Abbey on Saturday 3 October, with two large-scale, flashmob-style performances at 4pm and 5.30pm.
The free family event is being organised by Mary Shelley’s House of Frankenstein in partnership with the Dorothy Coleborn Dance School and Bath Children’s Literature Festival. Around 80 dancers aged from six to 18 will perform specially choreographed routines celebrating Mary Shelley’s connection with Bath and the enduring popularity of Frankenstein.
Mary Shelley lived in Bath in 1816 while working on the novel, and the city’s connection with the author is now explored across the five floors of Mary Shelley’s House of Frankenstein.
Vicki Smith, director of Mary Shelley’s House of Frankenstein, said, “Mary Shelley changed literary history while living in Bath, and we’re thrilled to celebrate her legacy in such a vibrant and accessible way.
“Freak Out with Frankenstein is all about bringing people together through creativity, performance and fun. We hope residents and visitors will join us to experience this unique spectacle in the heart of the city. We’re looking forward to welcoming people from across the region to experience this dance event together.”
Families are invited to gather around the Bath Abbey and Stall Street area to watch the free performances and enjoy an afternoon combining dance, music and one of literature’s most famous characters.
The event forms part of the closing weekend of Bath Children’s Literature Festival.
