A Bath mum and her seven-year-old son are preparing to run 5km in the dark to raise money for the Royal United Hospitals (RUH) Bath after the care given to her three-year-old daughter.
Emily Smith and her son will take part in the RUHX Glow Run in October, just two months after her daughter was rushed to A&E at the RUH with a broken arm. She needed an operation the following morning and Emily said the kindness shown by staff throughout the experience made a huge difference to the whole family.
She recalled how the X-ray team allowed her to stay sitting with her daughter, A&E staff gave her stickers and the Theatres team allowed Emily to climb into bed with her daughter as she was taken for surgery.
Emily said, “Every single member of staff we met made me feel so safe, reassured, completely normal for being so emotional about her, and they went out of their way to support us as a family.”
Now Emily and her son want to give something back by taking part in the Glow Run.
Emily said she decided to sign up “because the staff work so hard, and a smile goes such a long way when you’re in such a state of emotional turmoil.”
The Glow Run is a family-friendly event organised by RUHX, the official NHS charity of the RUH Bath. Participants can choose between a sunset 2km route and a fully after-dark 5km course, with families invited to run, walk, dance or jog around the illuminated route.
Money raised through the event will help RUHX provide additional support and facilities for patients, families and staff at the RUH.
Tickets cost £10 for adults and £7.50 for children.
