Young people making a difference in their communities are being encouraged to step into the spotlight as nominations open for the 2026/27 Bath and North East Somerset Community Awards.
The annual awards include the Sara Banks Young Volunteer of the Year Award, celebrating an exceptional young volunteer aged up to 25 who has given their time and energy to help others.
Families, schools, charities, clubs and community organisations across Bath and North East Somerset are being encouraged to nominate young people whose volunteering deserves recognition.
Now in their 17th year, the Community Awards celebrate volunteers, charities and organisations making a real difference to local people, including those who promote equality, inspire others to get involved and provide outstanding support within their communities.
Alongside the Young Volunteer of the Year Award, this year’s categories include the Beryl Dixon Community Leader of the Year Award, Jenny Willson Volunteer of the Year Award, Peter Duppa-Miller Parish Award and Charity of the Year Award.
Two new awards have also been introduced for 2026/27 – Support Animal of the Year, recognising an exceptional animal supporting people through a community organisation, and the Chair’s Special Lifetime Achievement Award for an individual or group whose dedication has made a lasting difference.
Councillor Shaun Stephenson-McGall, Chair of Bath & North East Somerset Council, said, “Every community has people who quietly make an extraordinary difference to the people around them and make Bath and North East Somerset a better place to live. We need you to tell us about them.
“This year the new Special Lifetime Achievement Award celebrates people whose dedication has made a lasting difference. We’re also delighted to launch the Support Animal of the Year category to recognise incredible animals that improve lives. I can’t wait to see your nominations come in for all the categories.”
A public vote will take place for Charity of the Year and Support Animal of the Year.
The awards are supported by partners including the B&NES Third Sector Group (3SG), B&NES Avon Local Council Association, Black and Ethnic Minority Senior Citizen Association, Everyone Health and the Student Community Partnership.
Becky Somerset, Chief Executive Officer at 3SG, said, “The strength of our communities is built on the commitment, compassion and energy of local people and organisations who go above and beyond to make a difference. The Community Awards are an opportunity to celebrate those achievements, recognise unsung heroes, and inspire others to get involved.”
Nominations are open until midnight on Sunday 29 November 2026 and can be submitted through the Bath & North East Somerset Council website. Paper nomination forms are also available from the Community Engagement Team by emailing email hidden; JavaScript is required or calling 01225 396975.
The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on 22 February 2027.
Young people interested in volunteering can also explore opportunities at 3SG’s Annual Volunteer Fair at Bath Abbey on 22 October, or through Everyone Health’s Simply Connect service.
