We catch up with Jerry Burgess from the Bath Kung Fu Academy and talk about his love of martial arts and how they can help children of all ages
Hello Jerry. When and why did you start the Bath Kung Fu Academy?
Bath Kung Fu Academy sprung into life almost a couple of decades ago. I’ve always been involved in fitness and sports, and the benefits of Kung Fu for all ages are huge. Therefore starting Bath Kung Fu Academy seemed the ideal vehicle to share those benefits with as many people as possible.
What is your own background in martial arts?
I was very reluctantly dragged a long by a great friend to a Kung Fu demonstration when I was about 17 years old and then he persuaded me to give the class a go. I didn’t plan on continuing, but some 30 something years later I find I still love it more everyday.

The benefits are far reaching, much more than I expected. Obviously it has massive self defence applications which in turn create greater self-confidence, self-discipline and situational awareness. However, I find Kung Fu has helped in all areas of life whether learning a new physical activity like surfing or snowboarding, or just shutting a cupboard door more efficiently!
I have a strong Christian faith and the values of Kung Fu teach similar respect. I’ve worked with various agencies, including the Government, personal protection, professional athletes and martial art classes, all of which bring their own joy.
Who is welcome to come along and enjoy your classes?

All our welcome, children from 5-12 years in the Juniors Class, then all the way up in the Adults Classes. All the classes are very welcoming and there’s a real sense of community and support in learning.
What are the benefits of martial arts for students of all ages?

Kung Fu really is a great way of improving physical strength, speed, agility and motor skills, as well as covering all aspects of self-defence. However, the mental benefits of confidence, discipline, conflict management and situational awareness are incredible tools for life.
What do you enjoy about teaching kung fu?
Kung Fu is my passion and it’s wonderful to share it and see others light up from doing it. Over the years I’ve had so many students come back to me and explain how its saved them from the school bully, as well as adults who’ve worked in more extreme circumstances and how it’s saved their lives!
Do you work with schools across the Bath area?

We do indeed and have good relations with a number of schools in the Bath area. One of the common threads they feed back is about how it benefits the children’s discipline and moral compass.
When and where do your lessons take place?
We have children’s classes on Mondays in Corsham Community Campus, Wednesdays in Batheaston Youth Club and Thursdays in Weston village Free Church. All of the Juniors classes are from 6pm until 6.45pm. The adults classes are at the same venues (Batheaston is in the Scout Hall) from 7pm until 8.30pm.
