Children at Walwayne Court Primary School in Trowbridge celebrated languages and cultures from around the world as part of a special school-wide Languages Day.
The event was held to mark the European Day of Languages, with pupils and staff invited to come to school dressed to represent a country of their choice, or in an outfit inspired by a word or phrase in a language that was new to them.
The day began with a special assembly exploring the importance of learning languages and celebrating the diversity of cultures represented within the school community. Throughout the day, classes took part in a range of activities linked to different languages and countries, creating what the school described as a great buzz around the classrooms.
Children enjoyed seeing the wide variety of costumes and flags on display, as well as learning new vocabulary from one another. Pupils were encouraged to teach their friends their chosen word or challenge them to guess which country their outfit represented.
Languages Day also gave the school an opportunity to celebrate the diversity of its own community, with 16 different languages spoken by families at Walwayne Court.
Headteacher Sharon Turley said, “This is a really valuable experience for the children, as well as being fun. Sixteen different languages are spoken in our school, and children are taught about other cultures and religions throughout their time at school, helping to develop an understanding and tolerance of different people.”
The school is already looking forward to holding its next Languages Day.
