Rhythmic gymnastics combines elements of gymnastics and dance with music and apparatus including ribbons, hoops, balls, ropes and clubs. Alongside learning jumps, leaps, balances and routines, children develop confidence, determination, teamwork and friendships.

The club offers recreational classes on Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings, alongside novice and competitive squad training on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Half-term and summer camps are also available.

The club’s welcoming approach has helped create what members describe as the ‘Team Bath family’, with many youngsters joining at four or five years old and continuing through to university age, sometimes returning as coaches.

One parent commented, “The club has been great for my daughter. She has gained in confidence and learned some amazing skills.”

Another added, “Rhythmic gymnastics is a big part of my daughter’s life. She has made good friends at this club and loves being here.”

From local beginnings to Olympic success

Originally established as City of Bath Rhythmic Gymnastics Club in September 1996, the club was founded through an initiative involving Oldfield School and the local sports development team to introduce rhythmic gymnastics to Bath.

Under the guidance of coach Lisa Higgins and later Sarah Moon, now club chair, the club developed from just two training evenings a week into an established gymnastics community.

Over the years, it has produced national champions and international competitors, including London 2012 Olympians Lynne Hutchison and Francesca Fox, who both began their rhythmic gymnastics journeys with the club, enjoying highly successful careers, coached and supported throughout by Team Bath RG.

The club has been represented at the British Championships every year from 2002 to 2026, winning numerous titles and medals along the way. Despite these achievements, the emphasis remains on making gymnastics accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

Sarah said, “Times have changed, people have changed but the essence of the club is the same. We are here to support each other, look after each other and bring out the best in everyone.”
