A group of 21 adventurous pupils from Stonar School in Atworth, Wiltshire, have successfully completed the Malvern Hills Nightfall Challenge, tackling a demanding 18km route with more than 1,200 metres of ascent.
The pupils, from Years 9, 10 and 11, set off in the late afternoon, walking across the ridge as daylight gradually faded. Along the way, they navigated between checkpoints and tackled steep climbs and descents through the stunning Malvern Hills.
Fortunately, clear skies and bright moonlight meant that head torches were not required throughout the challenge, allowing pupils to enjoy the unique experience of travelling through the hills under natural light.
The challenge formed part of Stonar’s wider Adventure Programme, providing an opportunity for pupils to develop their navigation skills, teamwork, resilience and independence.
James Burns, Stonar’s Head of Adventure Training, said, “Despite the physical demands of the walk, spirits remained high, with pupils demonstrating determination and impressive perseverance. The combination of challenging terrain and spectacular views made for an unforgettable adventure.
“The Nightfall Challenge was a fantastic success and a fitting showcase of the adventurous spirit that thrives at Stonar.”
