Pupils at St Benedict’s Catholic Primary School in Midsomer Norton have been getting creative with painting, sculpture, photography and mixed media as part of a special Arts Week.
The school, which is part of the Dunstan Catholic Educational Trust, took part in Sky Arts’ Access All Arts week, a national initiative designed to encourage primary school children to explore and enjoy the arts. Throughout the week, pupils across the school experimented with different materials, techniques and forms of creative expression, with each class taking on its own artistic focus.

Owl class developed their painting skills, concentrating on brush control and exploring how different techniques could be used to create their artwork.
Starling class moved into three dimensions, creating clay house tiles while developing their sculpture skills and learning how to work with clay.
Puffin class experimented with painting and mixed media, combining different materials and techniques to produce their own individual pieces.
Meanwhile, Kingfisher class explored craft and design alongside photography, giving pupils the chance to think about composition, visual storytelling and how images can communicate ideas.
The activities formed part of St Benedict’s wider commitment to giving children opportunities to develop their creativity, confidence and self-expression through the arts.
Mrs Croker, headteacher at St Benedict’s Catholic Primary School, said, “Arts Week has been a wonderful opportunity for our pupils to explore their creativity and discover new ways of expressing themselves. It has been fantastic to see the enthusiasm and imagination they have brought to each activity, whether they have been painting, sculpting, designing or taking photographs.
“Each class has approached their creative work in a different way, allowing pupils to develop new skills while also having the freedom to experiment and enjoy the process. We are incredibly proud of the artwork they have produced.”
Helen Taylor, CEO of the Dunstan Catholic Educational Trust, added, “Creative learning is an important part of our schools because it gives every child the opportunity to discover their strengths and develop their own ideas. We hope the experiences St Benedict’s pupils have had during Arts Week will inspire them to keep creating and exploring long after the week has finished.”
Families interested in finding out more about St Benedict’s can also attend one of the school’s forthcoming open days. They will take place on 19 October, 19 November, 2 December and 7 January, from 9.15am-10am.
