A group of 56 pupils from Poland have enjoyed a taste of British education during a visit to Lawn Manor Academy in Swindon, where they discovered the differences between the two countries’ school systems.
The 13 and 14-year-olds were welcomed by 43 of Lawn Manor’s student Welcome Ambassadors, who volunteered to help their visitors explore the school, take part in lessons and get to know their British counterparts.
The Welcome Ambassadors are pupils who represent the school and help visitors feel included, whether they are prospective students and their families or international guests. They also help organise the academy’s annual Celebration of Welcomes and Cultural Day events.
During the visit, the Polish pupils toured the school, sampled a range of lessons and spent time playing board games with Lawn Manor students in the library. A highlight was a special music and dance showcase, featuring performances by pupils who had selected their own songs and choreographed their own routines.
Year 10 pupils Tilly and Lydia were among the Welcome Ambassadors who helped make the visit a success. Lydia, who also played bass guitar in the showcase, said, “It was interesting showing them the classrooms and what it’s like to be at school in the UK. We found out there were quite a few differences in the subjects they learn compared with us, and they were surprised that we all wear a uniform.
“I wish schools in the UK didn’t have uniform and had a shorter school day, like in Poland!”
Tilly, who has been a Welcome Ambassador since Year 9, explained how the role offers increasing responsibilities as pupils progress through the school.
“Each year you get to do more things and take on bigger roles. It’s cool to show people around, welcome them and make them feel included.”
The international exchange will continue next year when pupils from Lawn Manor, including Lydia, make a return visit to Poland to experience life in a Polish school.
Russell Langdown, Headteacher at Lawn Manor Academy, said, “We’re very proud of the welcoming and inclusive environment here at Lawn Manor and we think it’s incredibly important to embrace and celebrate what makes us different, as well as giving our pupils an international perspective on learning and life.
“By giving our pupils the opportunity to spend time with their Polish peers, they can expand their outlook and see different perspectives, all things that will benefit them as they go through life.”
