Wiltshire College exceeds apprenticeship target to boost local opportunities for young people

Wiltshire College exceeds apprenticeship target, creating more career opportunities for young people across the region.

Families across Wiltshire could benefit from more career opportunities for young people, as Wiltshire College & University Centre has exceeded its ambitious apprenticeship target ahead of schedule.

The college’s ‘150 in 100’ campaign set out to secure 150 new apprenticeship pledges in just 100 days – and has already surpassed that goal thanks to strong support from local employers.

Wiltshire College exceeds apprenticeship target, creating more career opportunities for young people across the region.

Now, the college is aiming even higher, extending the campaign to reach 200 pledges, opening up even more pathways for school leavers and young people across the region.

The initiative brings together businesses from sectors including construction, engineering, business, and health and social care, all investing in the next generation of talent.

For families, apprenticeships offer a valuable alternative to traditional academic routes, allowing young people to earn while they learn and gain real-world experience.

Becs Ponting, Business Relationship Manager at Wiltshire College & University Centre, said, “Reaching the 150-pledge target so quickly is incredible and it shows how strongly employers across the region believe in the value of apprenticeships.

“Employers are facing a highly competitive labour market and evolving skills needs. Apprenticeships offer a sustainable way to grow talent from within, while giving young people the opportunity to build skills, confidence and long-term careers.”

The campaign launched during National Apprenticeship Week in February, with the aim of tackling local skills shortages and making it easier for employers to take on apprentices through tailored support.

Glen Blacker, Director at Avonside Engineering, said, “There’s such a lack of support for young people these days. We felt we had the opportunity to offer students the chance to get involved with engineering and help develop the next generation.

“If more companies can do that it will be great for the future.”

The college continues to work closely with employers to create high-quality opportunities, helping young people across Wiltshire take their first steps into the workplace.
