St Mary’s School staff raise nearly £6,000 for CRY in Bath Half

St Mary’s Catholic Primary School staff in Bath have raised nearly £6,000 for CRY after running the Bath Half in memory of Will Thomas.

Staff from St Mary’s Catholic Primary School in Bath, part of the Dunstan Catholic Educational Trust, have raised nearly £6,000 for Cardiac Risk in the Young after taking part in the Bath Half Marathon.

The team ran in memory of Will Thomas, the 23-year-old son of Simon and Ann Thomas, who died in 2022 from Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome.

St Mary’s Catholic Primary School staff in Bath have raised nearly £6,000 for CRY after running the Bath Half in memory of Will Thomas.

Their fundraising effort has supported CRY, a charity working to prevent sudden cardiac deaths in young people through awareness campaigns, genetic research, cardiac screening and support for bereaved families.

The school community came together to back the runners, with pupils, parents and staff all showing their support on the day.

St Mary’s said the event reflected the school’s strong sense of community, as well as its commitment to supporting causes that make a real difference to young lives.

CRY says that at least 12 young people in the UK die suddenly each week as a result of undiagnosed heart conditions. The charity provides support, information and screening services to help save lives and support families affected by young sudden cardiac death.

Nicole Pecchia, headteacher at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, said, “Our staff running the Bath Half was our way of remembering Will and supporting CRY’s vital work.

“It’s been incredible to see the generosity of our school community and beyond – every donation helps prevent another family going through what we have experienced.”

Helen Taylor, CEO of the Dunstan Catholic Educational Trust, said, “We are so proud of the St Mary’s staff team for taking on this challenge in Will’s memory.

“Their dedication is inspiring, and the funds raised for CRY will help continue vital work to prevent sudden cardiac deaths in young people.”

Anyone wishing to support the campaign can donate via the team’s JustGiving page.
