Wells Cathedral School has announced the appointment of a new headmaster, with Mr James Davies set to take up the role in September 2026.
He joins from Halliford School, where he has served as headmaster since 2017, overseeing a period of growth and securing a ‘Significant Strength’ recognition in its most recent inspection for pupil leadership.
Raised in Manchester, Mr Davies studied Music at University of Sheffield and has held a number of roles in both education and music. His career includes senior positions across leading independent schools, alongside work as a Director of Music in prominent parish churches.
He is currently a Reporting Inspector for the Independent Schools Inspectorate and a Board Member and Chair-elect of the Society of Heads. He also serves as Education and Safeguarding Governor at the Yehudi Menuhin School, one of the UK’s specialist music schools.
Outside of education, Mr Davies has volunteered for many years with the RNLI and now contributes to its educational work. A keen sailor and scuba diver, he will be joined in Wells by his Labrador, Bracken.
Chair of Governors Robert Powell said, “James’s appointment marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Wells Cathedral School, one rooted firmly in tradition, yet looking confidently to the future. We are confident that James will guide the school into its next phase with vision, warmth and a steadfast commitment to holistic education and excellence in music, sport and the creative arts.”
Mr Davies added, “I am honoured to have been invited to serve as the 86th Headmaster of Wells Cathedral School and to carry forward its unique heritage. From my very first visit, I was struck by the warmth of welcome and the strong sense of community. I look forward to getting to know all members of the school community and working closely with Alastair Tighe to ensure a seamless transition.”
Mr Davies will succeed Alastair Tighe, whose eight-year tenure has seen the school achieve its best A-Level results in Somerset.
