Batheaston Church school unveils magical new library

Batheaston Church School has officially opened a stunning new library, an enchanting handcrafted space created by local artists Alex and Paul of Lucas Antics.

The opening was celebrated at a special event attended by families, pupils, the school choir, visiting author Fleur Hitchcock, and the artists themselves.

Batheaston Church school opens a magical new library designed by local artists, featuring murals, cosy reading spaces and a bespoke indoor treehouse.

The new library represents a significant investment in reading, creativity and pupil wellbeing. It transforms the former space into a magical environment where children can read, explore and let their imaginations flourish.

The project began last year when pupils were asked three simple but powerful questions: “What do you want in your library? How do you want it to feel? What inspires you to pick up a book?”

Their responses shaped every element of the redesign. Children described wanting cosy corners, colourful creatures, places to dream, spaces to escape into stories and walls that felt welcoming and enchanted.

Artists Alex and Paul worked closely with the school community to bring these ideas to life. Rather than being installed in a single day, the library grew week by week, designed and built entirely on site.

The pair became familiar faces to pupils, answering questions, demonstrating their craft and allowing children to watch a creative space come to life.

Every detail has been carefully created. From painted bookworms that evolved after conversations with pupils, to vibrant artwork across the walls, the library blends artistic skill with a deep understanding of what inspires young readers.

One highlight of the new space is a bespoke indoor treehouse. Constructed after children expressed a wish for a snug, quiet area to read and reflect, the handcrafted hideaway provides a calm environment that supports emotional regulation as well as a love of stories.

At the official opening, the school choir performed a reading-themed song while families explored the transformed space.

Author Fleur Hitchcock also joined pupils to celebrate the possibilities the new library offers.

The completed library is more than a room. It is a living, breathing space shaped by creativity, collaboration and the voices of the children themselves. It stands as a testament to the school’s commitment to nurturing a lifelong love of reading.

The library is now open for use by all pupils at Batheaston Church school.
