Ian Waller and his family enjoy what could be one of the best Sunday lunches in Bath
The Old Crown in Weston has always had the look of a proper local, and under its new landlord and chef, Costel, it’s fast becoming just that – a community hub where everyone feels at home, including families looking for a great Sunday roast.
We arrived to find the pub buzzing with life. Our table, tucked next to a crackling woodburner, was the perfect spot to soak up the relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Around us, a children’s party was in full swing in one of the side rooms, while the big screens showed a rugby international and Premier League football to an enthusiastic crowd. It felt like exactly what a local pub should be – lively, inclusive and welcoming.
Costel explained that Sundays are always busy, with families well catered for thanks to a children’s menu and smaller portions of the main roasts. The choice was classic and tempting – chicken (£18), pork belly (£19), roast beef (£20) or a beetroot and butternut squash wellington (£18) – all served with beef dripping roast potatoes, roast carrots, parsnips, spring greens, homemade Yorkshire puddings and rich gravy. For those not in the mood for a roast, there was also The Old Crown Smash Burger (£14) and cider-battered haddock and chips (£15.50), along with a good range of kids’ dishes.
The wait for food was just right – long enough to suggest everything was freshly cooked, but not so long that the teens were reaching for snacks. When the roasts arrived, served by Costel himself, they looked and smelled incredible – and they tasted even better. This was easily one of the best pub roasts we’ve had in Bath. Generous portions, perfectly cooked meat, fresh vegetables and Yorkshire puddings that were big and fluffy without being dry. The roast potatoes – so often a disappointment elsewhere – were crisp on the outside and soft inside, and we were delighted to find jugs of extra gravy on hand.
My teenagers were full of praise too, happily clearing their plates – even the greens – though I did manage to steal one of my youngest’s roast carrots, which was absolutely delicious.
Costel made a point of checking in to make sure we were enjoying everything, clearly proud of what he and his team are building. That sense of care and personal touch really stood out.
This isn’t the place for a quiet, candlelit meal – and that’s exactly its charm. The friendly, bustling atmosphere makes it perfect for families who want to relax without worrying about keeping the kids too quiet.
The Old Crown is also building its community spirit beyond Sundays, with regular quiz nights already proving popular, live music on the way, and a Thursday ‘piano, pie and a pint’ evening picking up a loyal following.
All in all, The Old Crown in Weston offers a fantastic family Sunday lunch – hearty, homemade and served with genuine warmth. Costel’s enthusiasm is infectious, and it’s clear that this pub is fast becoming a real local favourite.
