Bath Building Society launches pilot financial education programme in local primary schools

Bath Building Society has launched a new pilot programme bringing vital financial education to primary school pupils in Bath.

Working in partnership with WizeUp Financial Education – a charity dedicated to equipping young people with the skills they need to manage money and prepare for adult life – the Society has begun delivering workshops at two local schools.

The first to take part was Oldfield Park Junior School, where pupils in Years 5 and 6 enjoyed sessions on topics including Budgeting & Saving, What Happens in the Future and Interview Skills. The workshops are designed to help children develop practical skills they can build on as they move into secondary education.

During the Budgeting & Saving session, pupils explored how families manage money and learned about budgeting, spending, and how interest works in banks and building societies. They also took part in a mini business project – designing and pricing cards with materials such as glitter and stickers, then calculating how much profit they could make.

The initiative forms part of Bath Building Society’s wider mission to promote financial wellbeing in the community. “With the cost-of-living crisis, it has never been more important to help young people understand how to manage their money and avoid debt, while also improving life skills and employability,” said a spokesperson for the Society.

Bath Building Society has a strong track record in this area, running free workshops for schools and sixth forms across Bath and North East Somerset. In 2024, the team delivered more than 55 hours of sessions to 1,524 students, including a specially tailored programme for Three Ways School.

The second primary school in the pilot, St John’s Catholic Primary School, is due to take part towards the end of the academic year.
