Families are invited to weave their way through a web of ancient legend this October half term (25 October – 2 November), as The Roman Baths launches its brand-new Spooky Spider Hunt — a Halloween adventure inspired by the myth of Minerva and Arachne.
The tale tells of Arachne, a talented mortal weaver who challenged Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom and craft, to a contest of skill. When Arachne’s tapestry proved too fine, Minerva punished her by transforming her into a spider, destined to weave for eternity.

This ancient story is brought to life through a fun, family-friendly trail that winds through the historic site, home to the famous gilt bronze head of Minerva, discovered in 1727.
Children can follow the spider-themed trail, search for colourful spiders, and even meet Minerva herself along the way. The activity is free with admission and runs daily until 2 November.
The half term fun continues with Mosaic Makes, free drop-in craft sessions from 27–31 October where families can create mosaic pumpkins and spooky spiders to take home.
Budding young archaeologists can also get hands-on in Archaeology Adventures (ages 6–12), held twice daily in the Investigation Zone, or older children (14+) can join a Needle Felting Workshop: Pumpkins on 25 October at the Clore Learning Centre.
Throughout the week, costumed Romans will bring history to life with tales from ancient Britain, while the children’s audio guide offers an engaging introduction to the site’s fascinating past. Families can round off their visit with a Spooktacular Children’s Afternoon Tea at The Pump Room Restaurant, before exploring The Roman Baths Shop for Halloween gifts, ancient-inspired books and cuddly spiders.
