You’re probably most familiar with Doug Naylor as the Emmy Award winning co-creator and writer of the iconic Sci Fi TV series Red Dwarf.
What you might not know is that this autumn Doug has brought his trademark humour and narrative flair to his debut novel for children, and will be appearing at Bath Children’s Literature Festival on Monday 29 September.
Sin Bin Island mixes the classic adventure ingredients of a foreboding orphanage, compelling characters and intriguing mystery, with magic, a spot of surrealism and a whole heap of funny. It is perfect for fans of Frank Cottrell-Boyce, David Baddiel and M.G. Leonard, and has been gathering high profile praise since publication just this month, not least from Red Dwarf actor Craig Charles who has described it as ‘Brilliant, totally brilliant. Exciting. Heart-stopping. Hilarious. And touching too. It’s the book I always wanted to read as a kid but could never find.’
At his Bath Children’s Literature Festival event, Doug will be joined by Festival Director John McLay for what promises to be a fascinating chat about writing, inspirations with no doubt some Red Dwarf anecdotes thrown in for good measure. It promises to be the perfect family event for nostalgic parents to share with their young readers looking for their next un-put-downable read.
Detention just got dangerous!
At the end of each school year, four pupils from Cyril Snigg’s Correctional Orphanage for Wayward Boys and Girls are banished to Sin Bin Island, an eerie, storm-lashed rock, surrounded by eel-infested waters.
Doug Naylor is a British Emmy-award-winning television writer, Sunday Times bestselling novelist and an award-winning TV director. He is best known as the co-creator (with Rob Grant) of the iconic sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf for which he wrote or co-wrote all 74 episodes.
He was one of the two Head Writers at Spitting Image during the series heyday and co-penned the number one single The Chicken Song, for which he is not forgiven. He is also the author or co-author of three best-selling Red Dwarf novels. Sin Bin Island is his first children’s novel.
