Moorlands School in Bath marks its 75th anniversary with a street party

Moorlands Schools Federation spent June celebrating three quarters of a century of teaching children in Bath.

The festivities included assemblies, a celebratory event with 75 VIPs and a whole school ‘street party’ on Friday 13 June.

Moorland Infant and Junior Schools were opened in 1950. In this year, author C.S. Lewis published The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe; sweet rationing was still in effect; and only 350,000 homes in the UK had a television set.

The schools were built on the site of the former home of Anna Sewell, who is said to have drawn inspiration from the surrounding land when writing the classic novel Black Beauty.

At the 75th birthday celebrations on Wednesday 11 June, Moorlands Schools Federation was particularly honoured to welcome The Right Worshipful The Mayor of Bath, Councillor Professor Bharat Pankhania, in his first official engagement.

Additionally, former pupils, teachers and headteachers attended the event, including Professor Gwythian Prins, who attended Moorlands in 1954, and who reminisced fondly and reverently about Edith Wilkinson, the first headteacher. Several headteachers attended the event, including Bridget Collett, who was in the role as headteacher more than 25 years ago, and Susan Warby, who trained at Moorlands as a student teacher and became headteacher some years later.

“It has been a joy to celebrate the incredible milestone of 75 years of inspiring learning, friendship and community in style,” said Executive Headteacher of Moorlands Schools Federation, Louisa Sellars. “From 1950 to the present day, our journey has been shaped by generations of pupils, dedicated teachers and supportive families. We have been so excited to honour our past and we are looking forward to an even brighter future.”

Moorlands is one of 18 schools that are supported by The Partnership Trust, a Multi-Academy Trust based in Radstock.

Emily Massey, CEO of the Trust, said, “Congratulations to Moorlands on celebrating its 75th anniversary! The celebrations organised by the school, its staff and students was truly outstanding. It was inspiring to meet so many former pupils and teachers – highlighting the lasting impact Moorlands has had on the local community for so many years.”
