Family fun, fresh air and outdoor adventure at the Somer Valley Walking Festival

Somer walking festival

If you’re looking for free, fun, and family-friendly ways to get active and explore the local countryside, the Somer Valley Walking Festival is back this September with a packed programme of events designed to help families reconnect with nature, enjoy time together, and discover the beautiful landscapes right on their doorstep.

Running from Friday 12 to Sunday 14 September, the festival features a wide range of guided walks and outdoor activities across the Somer Valley, with plenty on offer for all ages and abilities.

From gentle strolls for little legs to buggy-friendly wellbeing walks, families can take part in experiences that highlight the area’s wildlife, history and hidden green spaces. Younger adventurers will especially enjoy the Super Pirates Family Festival at Timsbury Conygre Hall on Sunday afternoon (3pm – 5pm), where there’ll be a disco, circus fun, creative crafts and a giant inflatable ring for energetic play.

Evenings bring their own kind of magic, with the ever-popular Bat Walk on Saturday at 7:30pm, starting from St Nicholas’s Church in Radstock. It’s a chance to head out into Waterside Valley with real bat detectors and discover the nocturnal creatures flying overhead – a hit with curious kids and grown-ups alike.

There’s also the opportunity to try out new activities together, including Nordic Walking, Tai Chi and even a Seated Dance session – ideal for families looking to stay active in creative ways.

For those who prefer to explore at their own pace, why not download a self-guided audio trail and set off on your own adventure? Options include the Westfield Heritage Trails and the immersive Somer Valley Audio Trail through Haydon Batch, Wellow Brook Walk and Midsomer Norton Town Park.

Most events are free, family-friendly and led by local guides, so it’s a great way to get out and about together, learn something new, and enjoy the late summer sunshine.

The Somer Valley Walking Festival is organised by Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Somer Valley Rediscovered project, in partnership with the Somer Valley Ramblers.
