We have a chat with the new headmaster of one of Bath’s primary schools
Hi Joe. Can you tell us about your teaching career leading up to your new role at St Martin’s Garden Primary School in Bath?
I have taught a variety of Year groups, predominantly Year 6, and been involved in school leadership for approaching ten years now. Being an Advanced Skills Teacher for five years embedded a love of exploring research-based teaching and learning approaches in fun and meaningful ways.
How did the new position come about?
I have been at St Martin’s Garden for approaching two and a half years now. Initially, I started my career here as the Deputy Headteacher – a role which I thoroughly enjoyed. Knowing the school incredibly well, becoming the Headteacher here feels like a natural progression. I have extremely high expectations and belief in the amazing children and staff here. I had a strong desire to lead our school on the road to further success whilst working hard to engage with our fantastic community.
What do you find rewarding about working at St Martin’s Garden?
We have a really superb group of pupils here. As a Thrive school, all our staff are dedicated to ensuring children feel safe and form positive relationships with each other and adults. Our school is developing a real sense of purpose with clear goals which are within our reach. No two days are the same here which makes the day incredibly rewarding. We work closely with our amazing Trust – Palladian Academy Trust – further making us feel like a big family.
What do you enjoy doing away from teaching?
I love cycling or walking to work as these activities enable me to improve my own wellbeing and keep me (somewhat) fit. Additionally, these activities enable me to see the changing of the seasons and enjoy living in the moment which is really important.
I thoroughly enjoy playing guitar and listening to my collection of vinyl and CDs when not working. Most importantly, I love spending time with my fantastic family and seeing my daughter grow in confidence with a real zest for life!
