Westbury Leigh CofE Primary School receive Thrive Environment Ambassador Award

Westbury Leigh

Westbury Leigh Church of England Primary School has been honoured with the Thrive Environment Ambassador Award, recognising its exceptional commitment to creating a thriving, supportive and inclusive environment where every child can flourish.

The school has been praised for meeting all the criteria for the prestigious award, with clear evidence of the warmth and care embedded in daily practice. Highlights include its welcoming meet-and-greet systems, thoughtful transitions and comprehensive breakfast and after-school clubs staffed by Thrive-trained professionals.

In addition, the school’s innovative outdoor learning spaces, sensory-rich environments and dedicated school farm play a vital role in enhancing children’s emotional wellbeing and nurturing their connection to nature. The school also boasts creative spaces like the Circle and Den rooms, and strategically placed regulation stations both inside and outside the classroom.

“Our vision has always been to create a school where every child feels safe, supported and empowered to grow,” said Mrs Grimsey, Headteacher at Westbury Leigh. “Receiving the Environment Ambassador Award confirms that our approach to emotional wellbeing and inclusive education is making a real impact. We’re incredibly proud of our staff and students.”

Staff and students alike have seen the benefits. Sabrina Thomas, SEND Lead and member of the school’s pastoral team, added, “Our children know that their feelings matter. Whether it’s through time in the Den, planting vegetables on the school farm, or simply being welcomed each morning with a smile — they feel heard, understood, and valued.”

One pupil shared, “I like going to the Circle. It helps me when I feel worried. And the chickens on the farm make me smile!”

Westbury Leigh’s commitment to inclusion is further evidenced by its tailored provision to support individual emotional needs, proactive holiday support, and a strong emphasis on pupil voice in driving environmental improvements.

“We’ve seen first-hand how empowering children to help shape their environment boosts their confidence and sense of belonging,” said Anna Thurman, Learning Outside the Classroom Lead. “This award celebrates that shared journey.”

Westbury Leigh is a part of the Palladian Academy Trust family of schools, with each school using Thrive as a whole-school approach. The Trust is excited to be working collaboratively towards becoming an Ambassador Trust of Excellence in Thrive.
