Georgina Crawshaw asks her three year old son to try out the latest eco offering from scooter experts Banwood
I think most parents would agree that the inventor of the three-wheeled scooter deserves an almighty pat on the back. Not only have they revolutionised running errands with a toddler in tow, but they’re also significantly easier to carry than a balance or push bike when said small person decides they’re done for the day!
Of course those aren’t the only benefits. Scooters teach balance and coordination, promote fresh air and exercise, boost movement and muscle development, and sharpen motor skills. Did I mention they’re super fun too?
And scootering isn’t just for kids – adult versions are everywhere you look these days, thanks to the fact they’re eco-friendly, relatively inexpensive and ideal for short commutes.

So, the question isn’t whether to scoot – the question is where to start. But with so many options on the market how do you choose the right scooter for your little adventurer?
Cue luxury children’s lifestyle brand Banwood, who recently released an impressive new Eco Collection. Crafted entirely from 100% recycled plastic, these babies don’t just ooze all the vintage style and sophistication this family-owned brand is renowned for – the sustainable twist really sets them apart. My three-year-old can’t wait to put one to the test!

First things first – which of the 10 gorgeous shades should we go for? From ‘deep sea’ to ‘dusty rose’ – these earthy, timeless tones wouldn’t look out of place on a Farrow & Ball colour chart. My wee man selects ‘faded pink’ (his favourite colour) and it goes without saying that Banwood have a matching Eco-helmet to complete the look.
I’m pleased to see these are also made from repurposed waste (like discarded bottles, bags, cups and fishing nets). Second-hand protective headgear isn’t something I’d ever consider (signs of impact aren’t always obvious) but at least we’re minimising our carbon footprint and keeping plastic out of landfills and oceans.

The helmets only come in one size (50-54cm), but there’s an adjustable chinstrap and dial-fit system at the back so it’s easy to ensure a snug fit. It gets the thumbs up for comfort from my little man and we’re off.
Suitable for children aged three and up, the Eco-scooter features all the best bits of Banwood’s three-wheeled option – with the added bonus of being greener and (surprisingly) nearly half the price. Influenced by Scandinavian design, like all their kit, simplicity, functionality and safety are the name of the game. The deck features a wide, anti-slip base, there’s rubber handle grips for a firm hold and a rear-wheel brake for added control. The intuitive lean-to-steer system for changing direction is beautifully smooth – he’s whizzing around (with me chasing behind) before I know it!

I’m impressed with both the quality and durability of these scooters – it seems Banwood have thought of everything. The T-handlebar has three adjustable heights (so it grows with your mini rider) and the quick release spring pin under the steering system means it can be detached for easy transport. Speaking of which – you can also purchase a handy carry strap and protective gear (knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards) from the accessories section of the website.
My little explorer is all set for hours of fun cruising the streets on his new ride. I just have one request Banwood – please release an adult version in these dreamy colour schemes!
Eco Scooters £79, Eco Helmets £39.
