Ian Waller enjoys a perfect gig, full of fantastic performances, great tunes and loads of dancing!
Wow, what a gig! We’ve seen The Levellers a good few times over the years, but as The Levellers Collective – with a few extra, and simply stunning, musicians added to the line-up, this was their greatest gig yet!
The thing about Levellers’ gigs is that you know you’re in for a good time. Their blend of Celtic folk and pop is a thing of beauty, and given life by a union of supremely talented musicians who bring such life and magic to their performances. To be honest, while I’ve seen them a good few times, I’m not really familiar with the individual songs and certainly can’t sing along word for word like others in the audience, but it doesn’t matter. It’s the power, excellence and fun of the performance that makes it work.
With the additional musicians in place, it allowed for such creative arrangements of the songs, adding an extra depth and excitement to the evening. Up front, Mark Chadwick’s vocals are as powerful and emotive as ever, while Jon Sevink’s fiddle playing is a wonder to behold at any time.
Around them the band was just faultless, with the sort of performance that makes you want to pick up your old guitar and have a go, or perhaps book in for those first few lessons.
And special mention has to go to the sounds team. The sound at The Forum Bath is always really great but last night’s gig was the best yet. Thank you – great job sound people!
Of course, in no time the seated audience were up, down the aisles and dancing away in front of the stage, swaying, jumping and whatevering to the sounds of a great live band.
Did I love it? Just a bit – this was a great night out.
