Review – A family meal out at the all-new The Beefy Boys Bath

Beefy Boys

McWho? Seriously, this is the time to aim a whole lot higher and check out the best new burger bar in Bath. We are talking about The Beefy Boys at the top of Milsom Street, where burgers, fries and those essentials sides are quite simply the best in town

OK, I’ve never been a massive burger bar fan, mainly due to the limp, flavour-strange offerings from that other place – you know the one – dishes up. Although, to be fair, my kids love it there and maintain an unhealthy intimate knowledge of the menu, so it can’t be all bad.

The thing is, I prefer meals that taste freshly prepared and full of flavour, and The Beefy Boys do this in spades. We paid a visit early on Tuesday evening and the place was already full of energy and happy diners. Now these guys should know a thing or two about burgerness, after all, they are World burger championship finalists (yes, that is a thing) and winners of the National Burger Awards!

The waiting and welcoming team is a young, cheery and very well trained group, and they soon had us seated, ordering drinks and giving us a detailed tour of the menu. And there is plenty to choose from, including classic burgers, dirty burgers, specialty burgers, chicken burgers, veggie burgers and loads more too.

Fortunately Drew, our outstanding waitress, was the perfect tour guide, describing each dish with real knowledge and helping us pick the perfect meal. This meant The Dirty Boy – double American cheese, dirty mayo, beef dripping onions and bacon – for me; Ellen going for a Dirty Clucker – double American cheese, gherkins and dirty mayo; and 14 year old Joe picking the American Boy – double American cheese, gherkins, white onion, ketchup and mustard, albeit with a request to hold the gherkins and mustard.

While the kitchen staff – including The Beefy Boys founder Murf adding a touch of celebrity sparkle – did their stuff, we chilled out with a pint for dad, rum punch for Ellen and Dr Pepper for Joe. OK, thanks to the pesky Bath high ceilings, The Beefy Boys Bath is a pretty loud venue, but you know, it’s fine. There’s such a great vibe about the place, with groups of all ages enjoying the company and food, it doesn’t really get overpowering.

Once our food turned up, we realised that each side portion would easily suit two people. We’d gone for two lots of bacon fries and a side salad, with pretty much half of the fries ending up untouched. But you know, the burgers were the real stars. Wow, they are really good! Full of flavour, perfectly portioned and they’re called dirty boys for a reason, with fillings and flavourings oozing out the side with each mouthful. And that’s why each table has its own handy roll of paper towels…

Yes, of course we left room for desserts, with a milkshake for Joe, a superb chocolate sundae for me and Ellen sticking with a less calorific Americano.

Now burgers have never been my eating out meal of choice, but The Beefy Boys in Bath might just have changed that. As a family we really enjoyed our visit and agreed that it’s somewhere that’s perfect for a grown-up get-together, meals with the kids or a sneaky diet busting lunch when no-one is looking.

What was also useful for our two other teenagers who couldn’t make the restaurant visit was that The Beefy Boys also offer a takeaway service, so we could take their dinner home.
