Hayesdown pupils ‘power down’ to improve the school’s carbon footprint

Children at Hayesdown First School in Frome took part in a ‘Power Down Day last month to help reduce the school’s carbon footprint.

The initiative, promoted by Energy Sparks – a group that advises school on how to become more energy efficient, aims to raise awareness about energy conservation and promote eco-friendly practices among children, staff and the wider community.

On the day, children and staff were encouraged to reduce energy consumption by turning off unnecessary lights and electronic devices. In addition, the school’s Eco Team worked with the caretaker, Tom Roughley, to understand how the school’s heating works and turned the thermostat down for the day.

Hayesdown First School is an Eco-school and currently holds the top Green Flag award. The Eco team, led by Miss Alice Watts, is passionate about helping the environment and learning about how to be responsible in looking after the planet for their future. They were fully involved in planning the event for the school and spent ‘Power Down Day’ checking that classrooms were as energy efficient as possible by carrying out monitoring every 30 minutes.

Julia Battersby, Headteacher of Hayesdown First School, said, “This event is a fantastic opportunity for our school community to come together and make a positive impact on the environment. By powering down, we can demonstrate our commitment to sustainable practices and inspire others to do the same.”
