Families can put their engineering skills to the test this October half term with four days of hands-on workshops and a Halloween trail at the REME Museum in Lyneham.
Running from Tuesday 27 to Friday 30 October, the museum’s half-term programme gives children the chance to build with everything from recycled cardboard and junk materials to LEGO® and Meccano, with activities designed to encourage creativity, problem solving and plenty of practical fun.
Build a Tank Junk Modelling
Tuesday 27 October

The week begins with Build a Tank Junk Modelling, a drop-in session suitable for all ages. Young visitors can raid the recycling materials and use their imaginations to create their own REME-inspired vehicle to take home.
LEGO® Engineering
Wednesday 28 October

Children aged seven and over can take part in LEGO® Engineering, using genuine LEGO® parts to design and build a vehicle that actually drives.
Spaces for the supervised LEGO® sessions are limited, so families are advised to book in advance.
Cardboard Engineering
Thursday 29 October

The recycling continues with Cardboard Engineering, another drop-in activity suitable for all ages. Children will discover just how many engineering challenges can be tackled using one of the simplest materials around, with activities involving jumping, flying and driving.
Meccano Makes
Friday 30 October

Older children can get hands-on with Meccano Makes. Suitable for ages 10 and over, the drop-in workshop challenges visitors to use Meccano construction sets to engineer their own vehicles, equipment and other creations.
Halloween Trail
Friday 30 October to Sunday 1 November
There is also some spooky fun to be found around the museum over the Halloween weekend.
Families can take on the museum’s Halloween Trail, searching the galleries for ghosts, spiders, monsters, bats and other creepy characters as they explore the collection.
The trail is suitable for all ages and is included with normal museum admission. Families simply need to ask for a trail sheet at reception when they arrive.
The REME Museum, on Calne Road in Lyneham, tells the story of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and houses a huge collection of vehicles, equipment, objects and displays exploring the work of the Corps.
The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am-4.30pm, with last admission at 3pm.
