Families looking for an inspiring day out this summer can step back in time at Chippenham Museum‘s major new exhibition celebrating one of Wiltshire’s most fascinating historical figures.
Running until Saturday 19 September, Wiltshire and the World: John Aubrey and the Quest for Knowledge marks 400 years since the birth of John Aubrey, who was born in Easton Piercy near Kington St Michael.
Perfect for curious children and adults alike, the exhibition explores the life of the writer, antiquarian and early scientist whose endless curiosity led him to record everything from ancient stone circles and historic buildings to local traditions and the lives of ordinary people.
Aubrey believed in discovering things for himself rather than simply repeating what others had written. His passion for learning helped preserve valuable information about places and people that might otherwise have been lost forever.
Visitors can see original manuscripts, paintings and rare books returned to Wiltshire for the first time since Aubrey’s death in 1697. Together, they tell the story of a man whose fascination with the world stretched far beyond his home county while always remaining rooted in the Wiltshire landscape.
The exhibition invites visitors of all ages to follow in Aubrey’s footsteps by exploring, asking questions and discovering more about the world around them.
