Free family events at Wiltshire libraries this May

Wiltshire libraries host baby groups, free books and family events this May, alongside author talks and local history sessions across the county.

Wiltshire Council libraries are hosting a packed programme of family-friendly events this May, with baby and toddler sessions, free books and activities designed to support children’s early development alongside author talks and local history events.

Families with young children are being encouraged to head to their local library, where Baby and Toddler mornings are taking place throughout the month in towns including Devizes, Melksham, Warminster, Chippenham, Salisbury, Calne and Royal Wootton Bassett.

These relaxed sessions offer a welcoming space for parents, carers and little ones to connect with others in their community while enjoying free activities. Many include rhyme times and taster sessions from partner organisations, helping to support early speech, language and social development.

Families can also collect a free children’s book while stocks last and find out more about Bookstart packs and the wider services available through Wiltshire’s libraries.

Alongside the family-focused events, libraries across the county are celebrating the National Year of Reading with the Worlds Alive in Libraries tour. This includes an author talk with Fiona Robertson at Calne Library on 14 May, and a creative writing session and talk with Jacqueline Crooks at Warminster Library on 21 May.

May is also Local History Month, with a range of talks and workshops exploring Wiltshire’s past. Highlights include a session on the pubs of Warminster and an update on Wiltshire Museum’s move to the Assizes in Devizes, alongside reminiscence sessions and British Newspaper Archive workshops.

Councillor Mel Jacob, Cabinet Member for Communities, said, “Libraries are at the heart of our communities, bringing people together and providing opportunities for people of all ages to learn, connect and take part in local life.

“This programme reflects the priorities we set out in Our Wiltshire Plan and the role our libraries play in supporting healthier lives, encouraging a love of reading from an early age, and making culture accessible to everyone across Wiltshire.”

Wiltshire libraries continue to offer a wide range of free activities, resources and events for all ages, helping families learn, play and connect together.
