Young performers bring The Tempest, The Odyssey and more to The Egg this April in Theatre Royal Bath’s New Waves Festival.

Young performers from Theatre Royal Bath Theatre School are set to bring imagination, energy and creativity to the stage this spring as they present the New Waves Festival at The Egg.

Running from Friday 10 April to Saturday 18 April, the festival features three nautical-inspired productions, reimagining classic stories alongside an original devised piece created by the students themselves.

The Tempest

The programme opens with The Tempest, recommended for ages 12+, performed on Friday 10 and Saturday 11 April. This bold reworking of Shakespeare’s tragicomedy has been shaped by the students’ own voices and perspectives, offering a fresh and dynamic take on the well-known tale. The production uses an edited version developed by the Royal Shakespeare Company and director Aileen Gonsalves.

Also taking place on 10 and 11 April is The Aquarium of Impossible Things, a brand-new devised show for ages 6+. Created collaboratively in rehearsals, the piece invites audiences into a magical underwater world filled with imaginative creatures and playful storytelling, celebrating curiosity and creativity.

The Odyssey

The festival concludes with The Odyssey on Friday 17 and Saturday 18 April, suitable for ages 12+. This powerful adaptation of the ancient epic blends myth with modern life, taking audiences on a journey through storms, monsters and moments of self-discovery.

Anna-Louise Fleet, Participation Programme Producer at The Egg, said, “Our young people and dedicated creative teams have spent the past ten weeks bringing their ideas vividly to life. Each production feels like a true reflection of the individuals behind it. A unifying thread across the festival is a playful metatheatricality, with the backstage world often visible and many of the young people transforming into new character and taking on new roles in full view”.

Theatre Royal Bath Theatre School, based at The Egg, has been supporting young people aged 5 to 18 for more than 35 years, helping them build confidence, develop skills and explore all aspects of theatre in a supportive and creative environment.

Tickets for all performances are available via theatreroyal.org.uk or by calling the box office on 01225 448844.
