St Cecilia Concert celebrates musical talent at Downside school

Downside School st cecilia concert 2025

Downside School’s annual St Cecilia Concert has showcased the depth and variety of music-making across the school’s vibrant co-curricular programme.

Named in honour of the patron saint of music, the event offered pupils a superb platform to share their talents with friends and family.

The Percussion Ensemble opened the evening with an energetic performance of Hicks’ Follow Suit. The Concert Band, directed by Mrs Randall, followed with lively music from Pirates of the Caribbean.

Soloists added standout moments. Ermin impressed on the marimba with Goldenberg’s Etude in D minor, while Emily delivered a spirited interpretation of Pieczonka’s Tarantella. James offered a moment of calm with Ivor Gurney’s Sleep.

The Pipe Band, led by Mr Kerr, filled the hall with traditional marches including The High Road to Gairloch, Mairi’s Wedding and Scotland the Brave, complete with a dynamic drum solo in Rebel Piper.

Further variety came from the Jazz Ensemble, directed by Mr Thomson, who performed classics such as Moanin’ and Sunny. The String Ensemble added elegance with Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nacht Musik and Fauré’s Pavane.

The evening closed in cinematic style with the Orchestra, once again under Mrs Randall’s baton, performing Skyfall to an appreciative audience.

The concert was a celebration of the dedication and creativity of Downside’s pupils and staff, and a reminder of the joy that music brings to the school community.
