SAS Mentoring, an alternative provision with sites in Trowbridge and Salisbury, is celebrating after achieving the nationally recognised Young Carers in Schools Award with support from Wiltshire Council.
The award, run by The Children’s Society and Carers Trust, recognises education settings that successfully identify young carers and create supportive, inclusive environments where they can thrive.
Work towards the award at SAS Mentoring was led by Gary Jenkins, Senior Leadership Team Young Carers Lead, and Stacey Gibbs, Young Carers Operational Lead. Together, they strengthened systems across both sites to ensure young carers are identified early and receive meaningful, ongoing support, helping to reduce hidden disadvantage and improve outcomes.
Nikita Boydell, Managing Director of SAS Mentoring, said, “Gaining the Young Carers Award fills me with pride and emotion. It represents not just a recognition, but a promise to our young carers that they are seen and supported.”
She added, “My heartfelt thanks go to Gary and Stacey for their tireless efforts, to our staff and families for their ongoing care, and to Wiltshire Council for the invaluable support that has helped shape and strengthen our journey. This has truly been a team effort.”
As part of the programme, staff received specialist training delivered by Young Carer Ambassadors and a Voice Worker from Wiltshire Council.
Awareness has also been raised among learners through initiatives including young carer noticeboards and bespoke PSHE sessions.
One young carer said, “Being a young carer used to feel lonely, like no one else got it. Now I know there are others like me and staff who truly listen and care. It makes me feel supported and like I belong.”
The organisation has also introduced new policies, updated admissions information, improved monitoring systems and launched a dedicated young carers webpage for families.
Gary Jenkins praised the partnership with Wiltshire Council, saying, “A huge thank you to Wiltshire Council for their fantastic support – we would highly recommend partnering with them to any organisation looking to strengthen their support for young carers.”
Councillor Jon Hubbard, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said, “This is a fantastic achievement and reflects the dedication SAS Mentoring has shown to supporting young carers.”
He added, “Many young carers take on responsibilities far beyond their years, and the right support can make a real difference to their education and wellbeing. Supporting families and helping children and young people to thrive is a key priority within our Our Wiltshire Plan.”
