Widcombe Infant School is celebrating a highly positive Ofsted inspection report which recognises its inclusive culture, strong personal development and ambitious curriculum.
Inspectors visited the Bath school on 6 and 7 January and praised the warm, welcoming environment where pupils feel safe, valued and ready to learn.
The report highlights the strong relationships between staff, pupils and families, noting that children enjoy coming to school and demonstrate the values of friendship, kindness, honesty, respect and perseverance.
Inspectors found that pupils play well together and are confident that bullying does not occur. Children know they can speak to adults if they have any worries, helping to create a calm and supportive learning environment.
Pupils were described as eager learners who enjoy sharing ideas and contributing positively in class. Staff were praised for identifying and removing barriers to learning, particularly for vulnerable pupils and those with special educational needs and/or disabilities.
A wide range of enrichment opportunities, including football, dance and gymnastics, was also highlighted, alongside educational visits that broaden pupils’ horizons. Leadership roles such as house captains, librarians and play leaders help pupils to build confidence and teamwork.
Inclusion was described as central to school life, with high expectations for all pupils. Inspectors noted the strong pastoral support and the careful monitoring of its impact on children’s wellbeing and progress.
The school’s personal development programme was praised for its focus on creativity, equality and life skills. Pupils were described as polite, kind and respectful, with positive attitudes to learning.
Ofsted also highlighted the well-designed curriculum, noting that pupils achieve above the national average in the phonics screening check. Reading is prioritised from the outset in Reception, helping children to develop confidence and a love of books.
Headteacher Alison Watts said, “This report reflects our deep commitment to providing the very best we can for all our pupils, both academically and for their personal development. I am delighted that the new Ofsted framework recognised our strong commitment to an inclusive environment where personal development and wellbeing is greatly valued.”
Nathan Jenkins, Interim CEO of Palladian Academy Trust, said, “We are absolutely delighted with this inspection outcome for Widcombe Infant School. It is wonderful that Ofsted recognised the fantastic education the school provides and the strength of its whole-community approach.”
