How the Youth Guarantee Trailblazer is changing lives in Bath & North East Somerset

Youth trailblazer 7

In a world where young people face increasing challenges transitioning from education into employment, the Youth Guarantee Trailblazer programme in Bath & North East Somerset is quietly transforming futures.

Designed to support 16–21-year-olds who are not in education, employment or training (NEET), the initiative offers tailored, person-centred support that meets young people where they are and helps them get to where they want to be.

Whether it’s overcoming transport barriers, navigating complex health needs or building confidence to apply for apprenticeships, the Youth Guarantee Trailblazer is making a tangible difference. Here are just a few of the stories that show its impact.

Unlocking opportunities

One young man was already enrolled in Security Industry Authority (SIA) training when he was referred to the programme. But without additional support, he risked falling short of completing the course. Complex physical and mental health challenges had made traditional English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) college courses unworkable and digital poverty added another layer of difficulty.

The Youth Guarantee Trailblazer team stepped in with a bespoke solution:

• Arranged access to an online English course via the British Council.
• Helped him secure internet access at home.
• Provided ongoing encouragement and technical support.

Now, he is preparing to re-sit his SIA test, an essential step toward entering the security industry. His journey is a testament to how targeted support can break down barriers and build bridges to employment.

Getting to college, against the odds

For this 19-year-old, starting a Level 3 course at Bristol College was a major milestone. But with autism and a visual impairment, public transport was unsafe and unreliable. His mother initially helped with travel but her upcoming surgery meant that arrangement couldn’t last.

The Youth Guarantee Trailblazer team acted quickly:

• Coordinated with three local taxi firms to create a short-term transport plan.
• Secured funding to cover five weeks of travel while statutory SEND support was being processed.

Thanks to this timely intervention, he began his course on time and with confidence. His story highlights how practical solutions can safeguard educational continuity during vulnerable transitions.

Building confidence and a career

An 18-year-old who had completed college was eyeing a bricklaying apprenticeship. But moderate learning difficulties and low confidence made the application process daunting.

Enter the programme’s Information, Advice and Guidance Officer:

• Offered tailored support to help him navigate the application.
• Provided encouragement and built his confidence.

The result? He is now thriving in a Level 2 Bricklaying Apprenticeship.

From isolation to independence

Living in a rural area with limited transport, one young person’s dream of working in landscape gardening felt out of reach. He had a motorcycle and gear, but without a CBT certificate, he couldn’t legally ride.

With help from his Youth Trailblazer Employability Coach and Wellbeing Worker:

• He applied for funding through the Employment Support Fund.
• Completed his CBT test in September.

“Gaining my CBT certificate now gives me more choices and the freedom to get a job,” he shared. His story is a powerful reminder that mobility can be the key to opportunity.
