Following on from their strong A-level results last week, pupils at Wells Cathedral School are celebrating another year of excellent GCSE success.

Almost half of pupils secured top grades 9–7, with 15% attaining the coveted grade 9 – a noticeable increase on last year’s results. Nearly a third of pupils achieved grades 9–8, while more than 94% secured a grade 4 or above, well ahead of the national average of 67.4% across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The impressive results reflect the breadth of opportunities and teaching at Wells Cathedral School, with pupils excelling across the sciences, mathematics, humanities, languages, music and the arts. The sciences were a particular highlight: 47% of Physics candidates, 50% of Chemistry pupils and 47% of Biology pupils achieved grade 9. Computing pupils also impressed, with 77% gaining grades 9–7.

  • Art and PE – 100% grades 9–4

Head Master Alastair Tighe said, “I’m thrilled to be celebrating with our pupils after such an excellent set of results. Their success is testimony not only to their hard work and determination, but also to the skill and dedication of their teachers, as well as the support of their families.

“I am delighted that pupils have achieved so highly across such a wide range of subjects, while also taking full advantage of our wider co-curricular programme, which is a core part of a Wells education.”

Individual successes included

  • Clover, who gained eight grades 9–8, including top marks in Music, History, English Literature and Combined Science.
  • Poppy secured ten GCSEs, with seven at grade 9.
  • Joshua achieved eight grade 9s and will now pursue A-Levels in French, Geography and History.
  • Bill earned four grade 9s and five grade 8s.
  • Vienna achieved an outstanding nine grade 9s across sciences, Art, Maths and Music.

Wells’ specialist musicians also shone, with several taking GCSE Music two years early at the end of Year 9. Remarkably, 100% of these pupils achieved grades 9–7 and will now continue onto the specially designed ‘Wells Certificate’ in Years 10 and 11.

Deputy Head (Academic), Natalie Perry, commented, “We are absolutely delighted with this year’s results. Our pupils have significantly outperformed national averages across a diverse range of subjects, which is a reflection of both their hard work and the nurturing support of our teaching staff. This whole-school commitment to excellence empowers every pupil to achieve their full potential, and we couldn’t be prouder.”

Families interested in finding out more are warmly invited to the school’s Open Morning on Saturday 20 September 2025.
